Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair loss in round patches on the scalp and body. Alopecia is the medical term for baldness. With alopecia areata, missing hair often grows back approximately 6 months to 1 year later. Less than 5% of people lose all the hair on their head and body. Complete baldness of the scalp is called alopecia totalis. This type of hair loss is not contagious.. What causes alopecia areata? It is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys hair follicles. Hair loss due to alopecia areata tends to come on suddenly. The condition may be treated with steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, or immunosuppressive medications. People with alopecia areata suffer from more allergies, asthma, and autoimmune conditions compared to those who do not have the condition.

I’m looking at a picture of two mice. The one on the right looks healthy. The one on the left has graying fur, a hunched back, and an eye that’s been whitened by cataracts. “People ask: What the hell did you do to the mouse on the left?” says Nathaniel David. “We didn’t do anything.” Time did that. The left mouse is just old. The one on the right was born at the same time and is genetically identical. It looks spry because scientists have been subjecting it to an unusual treatment: For several months, they cleared retired cells from its body.

It can sometimes feel like your hair is everywhere: in your shower drain, in your brush, on your sheets, on your clothes, on your partner’s clothes — but just because you’re seeing it shed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re experiencing hair loss. You’re supposed to lose about 100 strands every single day, no matter how you wash or style your hair, says Maryanne Senna, MD, a dermatologist and instructor at Harvard Medical School who specializes in hair loss. But when you notice your hair’s not growing back after it sheds, or if you’re losing clumps that seem outside the norm, it’s usually a sign of or reaction to something else (or in many cases, multiple things) happening in your body, she says.

Zinc seems to be a super nutrient when it comes to preventing and treating hair loss. In one study, researchers compared the zinc levels of 50 people with hair loss due to alopecia areata to 50 healthy controls and found that all of the alopecia patients had significantly lower zinc levels. Another study examined the zinc and copper levels in 312 men and women experiencing hair loss. No matter the cause of the hair loss, all subjects had significantly lower zinc levels than controls.

Social support is crucial in dealing with stress. Talk to others- your spouse, friends, family members- face-to-face or at least on phone. If somehow, you can not talk to anyone, write down your experiences and feelings. Maintaining a daily diary or a ‘feelings-journal’ too can prove to be a great stress buster. Keeping yourself stress free will not only save you from chronic diseases but also from hair loss!

Tough to find but potentially worth it if you can hunt it down, it may help with a healthy scalp and better hair growth. Mix a tablespoon of gooseberry with two tablespoons of coconut oil. Vertex baldness is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and the relationship depends upon the severity of baldness, while frontal baldness is not. Thus, vertex baldness might be a marker of CHD and is more closely associated with atherosclerosis than frontal baldness.[23]

Originally, the Derma Roller was just a tool for skin care, but a later study confirmed that if used on the scalp in conjunction with minoxidil, it can help regrow hair better than using minoxidil alone.

I’ve been using this just a couple of times a week for the past month and honestly this works! I am truly amazed with this product. I am only 45 and I was really upset about my alopecia.  I see baby hairs popping up all over my bald spot and I couldn’t be happier.

Male hair loss (also known as male pattern baldness or ‘androgenic alopecia’) is usually genetic, although it can also be caused by extreme stress, illness, side effects to medical treatment, a major life event, skin disorders or hormone imbalance. The hormone testosterone is converted into DHT, which causes hair follicles to shrink. Hair production subsequently slows down or even stops altogether.

Low level laser devices approved by the FDA are promoted for use in male pattern hair loss. These devices are used at home without a physician’s prescription and vary in cost from $50 to over $1,000. They come in the form of combs, helmets, and hats. Limited studies are moderately persuasive that they stimulate hair growth.
