First a bit about your hair’s natural growth cycle: Each strand grows for several years, then enters a resting phase for three to four months before it is finally shed. Next, the follicle begins to grow a new hair, and the cycle begins again. In the case of severe physical or emotional trauma, post-pregnancy hormonal changes, and medical treatments like chemotherapy, there may not be much you can do to prevent hair loss, balding, or thinning hair (keep in mind that, in many of these cases, hair will regrow on its own). Hi Sarah, my hair looked perfectly fine until last when I started noticing that the hair at the very front of my head have started thinning, I made the mistake of trying a lot of chemical styling products. Ensure that you have a balanced diet and eat from all of the food groups in moderate amounts. Exercise and spend time outside to increase your vitamin D levels. Take a multivitamin and some zinc. Massage your scalp daily — or have another person massage your scalp — to increase blood flow. Check if you are on any medications where hair loss is a side effect. Hair loss can be hereditary, and it could also be the result of certain medical conditions, so you may want to see a doctor to rule out disease as a factor. Try to stress less, and, if need be, you can invest in a high quality, human hair weave/wig.
Regular protein treatment can come in the form of raw eggs beat in a bowl and added to the length of hair for approximately 30 minutes. Some prefer to use one egg combined with a tablespoon of hair oil and two tablespoons of water. Mix it up and massage into the scalp. Repeat weekly.
Protein: When the body does not get enough protein, it rations the protein it does get. One way the body can ration protein is to shut down hair growth. About 2 to 3 months after a person does not eat enough protein, you can see the hair loss. Eating more protein will stop the hair loss. Meats, eggs, and fish are good sources of protein. Vegetarians can get more protein by adding nuts, seeds, and beans to their diet.
It’s hard to miss these periods of shedding, and the trauma of seeing your hair fall or noticing your scalp widen can bring out a range of emotions, from helplessness to just plain confusion. Find a dermatologist who, in their profile, specializes in hair loss, Dr. Senna says. They see hair loss often enough that they know how to handle can pinpoint your symptoms in a very systematic way. And if you’re very concerned, it’s also ok to skip the derm and go straight to a trichologist — they’re less easy to find, but incredibly skilled and well-equipped to get to the root of the problem.

There are a wide range of conditions that can bring on hair loss, with some of the most common being pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Others include autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, Rogers says.

Both men and women tend to lose hair thickness and amount as they age. This type of baldness is not usually caused by a disease. It is related to aging, heredity, and changes in the hormone testosterone. Inherited, or pattern baldness, affects many more men than women. Male pattern baldness can occur at any time after puberty. About 80% of men show signs of male pattern baldness by age 70.

Before-and-after pictures may have been doctored to be misleading. How do you know if a hair loss treatment really works? Ask your dermatologist about any treatment you are considering.
