Some medications can trigger hair loss. Hair loss is a well-known side effect of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. But some common medications may also lead to hair loss, including anticoagulants that thin the blood, high blood pressure medication, gout medication, antidepressants, and birth control pills. By switching to a different medication under your doctor’s guidance, you can usually stop this kind of hair loss. Your lifestyle, especially one characterized by high-stress levels, not getting proper nutrition, and significant weight loss can play a major role in your health and the health of your hair. Although experts don’t know the exact process, there is a clear relationship between high levels of stress and hair loss.
Some forms of hair loss can be prevented by minimizing stress, eating a healthy diet and using sensible hairdressing techniques, and, if possible, switching to medications that do not cause hair loss. Hair loss from fungal infections can be prevented by keeping hair clean and by never sharing hats, combs or brushes with other people. Hair loss from hereditary-pattern baldness can sometimes be prevented by medication.
Hereditary hair loss affects approximately 30 million women in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Female-pattern hair loss—a.k.a. androgenetic alopecia—is the most common form and causes the hair on top of the head to thin. The over-the-counter preparation Rogaine, which contains the active ingredient minoxidil, can help. Applied directly to the scalp twice a day, it “can slow or stop hair loss in most women. In some cases, it can even help regrow hair,” says Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, a clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. “But the benefits are lost when you stop using it.” A newer over-the-counter regimen from DS Laboratories—which is composed of Revita Shampoo, Revita.Cor Conditioner, and Spectral.DNC-N (a scalp treatment)—includes antioxidants and stem cells and has been shown to stimulate and maintain healthy new growth. (Prices start at $31; dslaboratories.com for salons.)
Vitamin C-rich produce — Getting enough vitamin C in your diet is essential on its own because it’s a powerful antioxidant. It also helps your body absorb the iron it needs. Some awesome vitamin C foods include guava, red pepper, kiwi, papaya and broccoli.
The truth is that hair loss is a complex process that involves various genetic, hormonal and environmental mechanisms. Just like our skin, the hair follicle is subject to intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Intrinsic factors include our genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and extrinsic factors include smoking and UV radiation.
Hair-fiber powders: Colored, powdery fiber sprinkles are commercially available and may work to camouflage balding areas. These colored sprinkles have special properties that help them attach to hair and give a fuller appearance. Toppik is one manufacturer of these products and can be found online. These cosmetic products are available without a prescription, are fairly inexpensive ($20-$40 range), and quite safe with minimal risk. Often these may be used in addition to medical treatments like Rogaine, Propecia, and hair transplants, and they are a great temporary measure to tide one over for special occasions.
By decreasing your daily stress, you can have a direct impact on the health of your hair as well as your entire body. (5) Journaling and yoga are great natural stress relievers. Daily exercise is also crucial to stress reduction as well as encouraging good circulation, which both help promote healthy hair growth.
There you have it. As of now, ‘The big three’ (minoxidil, finasteride, and ketoconazole) are still the best treatment for male pattern baldness. And, well, one could say even a cure, since if you start treating your hair loss with these early on, you can quite likely hold on to your hair for a lifetime.

Stress is one of the leading factors that cause temporary hair loss in women. When there has been a significant stress-inducing event, it can change the cycle of the hair and lead to an increased loss during the shedding phase. Additionally, if anxious or nervous, it can be easy to mindlessly twirl, pull, or even chew on the hair, causing more follicles than normal to fall out. Stress is often the culprit behind thinning hair in young women, especially, due to the transitions they face through their late teens and 20s.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in women in which the body manufactures more androgens, or male hormones, than it normally should. Women who suffer from this condition may grow facial hair and extra body hair. One of the other symptoms of this condition is thinning of hair on the head. Women affected with PCOS may also experience weight gain, acne, menstrual irregularities, ovulation problems, depression, and infertility. Hair thinning may be the only outward sign that a woman is suffering from this condition.
Herbal solutions are always good . Healthbuddy Herbal Anti Hair loss oil is one of that kind, which is getting popularity these days as it consists the most powerful herbs which stimulates hair growth very fast. It is available in Flipkart.com as well as Amazon.in.
Even when it works, though, it can irritate the scalp. “That’s the only real side effect from minoxidil,” Penstein says, of the itchiness, flaking, and redness a few men develop. Those with very sensitive scalps may have problems with even a foam formulation and might want to try finasteride.
The most common type of hair loss, androgenic alopecia, usually follows a pattern with hair thinning in the front of the scalp first and progressing on to involve the back and top of the head. This type tends to be progressive.
“[Dry shampoo] deposits substances to coat the follicle that can build up,” Sonia Batra, a dermatologist Los Angeles, told me. “The resulting inflammation can weaken the follicles and increase shedding. These products can also cause hair follicles to stick together, so that a hair that would normally shed during brushing may take two or three strands along with it.”
And don’t bother reading those types of articles, they will just get in your head and make you experience side effects psychologically. If finasteride would be so detrimental to your health, it wouldn’t be available to the general public. There are millions of men taking it with no side effects who just go on about their lives, without reading paranoid articles on online forums.
Another way to diagnose what the problem is just by looking and listening, Rogers says. She asks what a patient’s mother, aunts, or grandmothers look like – if they have similar, or greater amounts, of hair loss. Using magnification on the scalp can show if a woman’s follicles vary in size – with some thick and others thin. These are two telltale signs of female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia.
Thx Domen for the useful info. Curious to know why you didn’t cover laser therapy as offered by Advanced Hair Studio? Or doesn’t the laser treatment combined with sawpalmtto tabs and minoxodil work? If it does work and you complete the 6 month program, will the growth be reversed if I stop using the products?
As the cycle runs its course, the shedding phase begins. Most people lose up to 100 strands of hair per day and up to 250 strands or more when the hair is washed. If you’re thinking about normal hair loss on that level, that’s still nearly 2,000 strands of hair a week for those who wash their hair daily. For women who experience abnormal sudden hair loss, this amount can easily double or even triple.
I used propecia in the past combined with minoxidil provided by my hairloss clinique. They have provided me with a liquid form of minoxidil which has caused me itchness wherever I applied it so I have given up using minoxidil however I noticed the combination of these two has made the best results and my hair started to grow back.
Hey Sarah. I’m 34 and I live in the US. I’ve been experiencing slight hair thinning in recent months. I’d like to get ahead of any potential hair loss. Are these products a permanent solution or will this be something that I must use long term. Is your products available here in the US and if yes who do a contact? Thanks..
Be sure you’re eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and generally taking good care of yourself and your hair. You can also try massaging castor oil, coconut oil, or a hair regrowth product into your scalp, which should help stimulate hair growth and strengthen the hair. If you follow all of the guidelines here and the problem continues, get checked out by a doctor to see if you have some medical issue.
Get some exercise. Walk, swim, or bike for 30 to 60 minutes per day. Or, try playing a sport like tennis, so you can take out your aggression by hitting a ball. The exercise will help to lower your stress levels.[12]
Deep breathing is the basic to many Yoga techniques. It is simple, easy and can be done anywhere while doing anything. You just need to take a five minutes break, sit straight (if not possible, stand straight), close your eyes and focus on your breathing process. Inhale slowly through nose, feel the air passing down till your abdomen and realize its making its way up till your head. Now just reverse the process, feel the air climbing down and gradually exhale it out through your nose. Deep breathing is a foolproof way of

Age-onset thinning, or “miniaturization,” refers to a progressive decrease of the hair shaft’s diameter and length. This happens at least in part because of androgens like dihydrotestosterone (or DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone that causes hair follicles to literally shrink in diameter. This type of hair thinning is referred to as androgenic alopecia, and it occurs in an equal pattern all over the scalp. However, pregnancy, ovarian cysts, medications, emotional or physical shock, and birth control pills can all affect hormone levels, making it complicated to pinpoint the reason for hair loss. For example, polycystic ovarian disease can exacerbate androgens and manifest as thinning, in which case you could treat the condition and fix hair loss. Get your hormone levels checked to see if an underlying health issue is the root cause.

Thanks! You definitely wouldn’t lose anything by switching to Lipogaine — quite probably it would be even more beneficial. Other than Propecia, I would use a hair loss shampoo and possibly look into dutasteride (I take 0.5 mg twice per week with zero side effects, but my crown is becoming thicker).
Eat well. “Focus on a diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, proteins and beneficial fats,” Dubsky says. “These nutrients stimulate hair follicles to promote a healthier scalp and ultimately, stronger hair.”
Sometimes the evidence lies in your scalp. The dermatologist may remove a small piece of the scalp. This is called a scalp biopsy. A dermatologist can quickly and safely perform a scalp biopsy during an office visit. A scalp biopsy can be essential to solving the case. Sometimes, a blood test is necessary.
The tests: A blood test to measure ferritin, the protein that stores iron in your body, is usually needed to diagnose iron-deficiency anemia. Your doctor may also check your blood level of hematocrit, which gauges how much of your blood is made up of red blood cells.

Without them, we would have a tough time digesting the food as well as absorbing the nutrients. They also boost our immune systems and even help in the manufacturing of vitamins A, K and B complex – which are essential for healthy hair.
I found that Magnesium (Dipping legs in Epson salt warm water) is very beneficial and helps me getting relaxed (reduces anxiety) with good sleep. However, when I started this routine for once in 3 days I found that my hairs started shredding. In 3 months I lost a huge amount of hair during this treatment. Though I was not able to relate it to this and thought was due to earlier stressful time. But when I tried this back now..I again experienced the same. Any idea why this causes hair loss?
I noticed that stress was actually playing a considerable part in my hair loss, however despite reducing stress I was still suffering from hair loss. I tried multi-vitamins too, but I don’t believe they helped at all 🙁
