Each individual hair may endure on the scalp for three to seven years before entering the catagen phase for around two weeks and then the telogen phase which can last for a few months. It is during this final stage that hair begins to sit higher on the scalp and can be pulled out with very little effort such as when brushing or washing your hair. After the hair has been shed, a new one will take its place and begin to grow. In the case of hereditary hair loss, this cycle becomes a lot quicker and it may only take months for a new hair to be shed, or in some cases a new hair may not replace the recently shed hair at all.
Reading all the above tips may give you a feeling as if hair care is a challenge. However, once you make a habit of taking proper care of your hair and also change your lifestyle to include good diet and exercises for body and mind, you’ll feel, how simple it is to pamper your hair!
Although a fever technically is any body temperature above the normal of 98.6 F (37 C), in practice, a person is usually not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C). Fever is part of the body’s own disease-fighting arsenal; rising body temperatures apparently are capable of killing off many disease-producing organisms.
There are dozens of health conditions, as well as a variety of lifestyle factors, that can lead to hair loss or thinning. Sometimes it’s just genetic—this is the sad truth behind many cases—but here are a few other likely culprits behind your hair falling out:
Corticosteroids injections into the scalp can be used to treat alopecia areata. This type of treatment is repeated on a monthly basis. Oral pills for extensive hair loss may be used for alopecia areata. Results may take up to a month to be seen.
The tests: A blood test to measure ferritin, the protein that stores iron in your body, is usually needed to diagnose iron-deficiency anemia. Your doctor may also check your blood level of hematocrit, which gauges how much of your blood is made up of red blood cells.
Tight ponytails, hats, scarves, cornrows, and bandanas can all pull on hair and lead to hair loss by a process called traction alopecia. The gradual, constant tension irritates the scalp and may cause hair to fall out. Ditto for tight rollers. Wear your hair down to eliminate tension, and your hair should grow back if traction alopecia was to blame for losing your locks. Beware especially of long-term use of tight hairstyles. These may scar your scalp and lead to hair loss that is permanent.
For women who are experiencing hair loss due to vitamin deficiencies, there are various strategies you can put into place to improve your outcome. Repleting vitamin D with healthy doses of D3 and correcting iron deficiency — by giving supplemental iron paired with vitamin C for better absorption — is essential, and biotin, a B vitamin, can be added to help the process, as it acts as a building block for new hair, says Levitan. The challenge is this is a slow process, and it can easily take three to six months to see hair thickness and amounts improve.
When thinning isn’t genetic, it can sometimes be avoided (and if it is genetic, you can often delay or slow the process). Educating your clients on ways to side-step environmental, chemical and mechanical damage will solidify your place as their go-to hair- and scalp health expert—and will, of course, keep their hair from thinning.

What worked for me was doing nothing about losing my hair and just letting nature take its course. My hair started receding in my early 20s, but only a little, then it stopped for about 30 years. Then in my early 50s my hair started receding and thinning very rapidly again. I panicked until my wife told me she loves bald men and had been wishing I would go bald. She talked me into just letting myself go bald. In less than two years I went from norwood 2 or 3 to norwood 6. I don’t regret my decision to go bald and have no desire to regrow my hair. My wife and I really enjoyed watching my hair recede and thin away. I love being bald and you couldn’t pay me to regrow my hair. In retrospect, I wish I had kept on balding in my 20s all the way to norwood 7.

Hair loss can be attributed to vitamin deficiencies, says Dr. Arielle Levitan, cofounder of Vous Vitamin. Many women do not know that they run low in iron or Vitamin D, which are some of the most common offenders, she explains. As a physician of internal medicine, I see women all the time very distressed about thinning hair. A simple blood test can help determine some of the more common culprits.
“This is the first time vitamin D’s possible role in hair loss has been highlighted,” explains Rania Mounir Abdel Hay, MD, a dermatologist at Cairo University, and co-author of the study. “It might regulate the expression of genes that promote normal hair follicle growth.” As for iron: Low levels may inhibit an essential enzyme that has been associated with hair loss in mice.
Hair loss treatment really depends on the type of hair loss you’re experiencing and what the causes are. This means your physician will need an accurate diagnosis, and for those with underlying medical conditions, treating the disease can often lead to less hair loss or regrowth.
