Hair loss is extremely common, affecting about 50 million men and 30 million women in the U.S. About 50% of men will have some hair loss by the time they turn 50. Hair loss is not life-threatening, though it can have devastating psychological effects, particularly in women.

While rubbing your hair with a towel seems like the quickest way to dry it, it is also the worst thing that you could do to your hair. Drying your hair vigorously with a towel will lead to hair breakage, tangles, and pulling. Instead, gently squeeze out the excess moisture from your hair with your towel and then let it dry naturally.

Hair-loss prevention depends on the underlying cause. Good hair hygiene with regular shampooing is a basic step but is probably of little benefit. Good nutrition, especially adequate levels of iron and vitamin B, is helpful. Treatment of underlying medical conditions like thyroid disease, anemia, and hormonal imbalances may useful in prevention.

Take vitamins and nutrients. Work with a nutritionist to establish a diet that is rich in any vitamins or nutrients you may not routinely consume, or that your doctor may have identified as deficient. Take vitamins or supplements that may provide additional doses beyond what you consume in diet.

Do not alter your medications for any reason. Talk with your doctor about your concerns. If you feel a medication is causing your hair loss, your doctor may be able to help by either adjusting the dose or prescribing a similar medication to take its place.

Stress can cause short-term hair loss such as alopecia areata, which causes discreet spots of hair loss, says Jeffrey Benabio, M.D., F.A.A.D., director of healthcare transformation at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. When overly stressed, the body’s immune system can attack the hair follicles—but hair may return soon after the stress becomes under control, according to the Mayo Clinic.

FDA Certified, clinically studied. In most of the cases people who tried it report thicker, fuller and healthier locks. Pronexa copes with vitamin deficiencies that are usually the cause of hair loss and hair thinning, as it is packed with hair growth vitamins. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can actually absorb damaging UV light and protect skin cells. It also repairs sun damage on the scalp, which can cause hair to thin. In one study, “Tocotrienols, or different types of vitamin E supplements, were studied for eight months in patients hair loss,” says Debé. Thirty-eight people received the supplement, and some received a placebo. The supplemented group had a 34% improvement in hair growth.” Debé notes that although the amount of tocotrienols used in this study is difficult to get from diet alone, barley is a very good source.

Good magnesium sources are: pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, spinach, cashews, mung beans, banana, swiss chard, black beans, millet, almonds, flax seeds, sorghum (jowar), peas, kidney beans, papaya, avocado.

If you notice your hair falling out in clear patches that aren’t growing back, this could be a sign that you have an autoimmune form of hair loss called, alopecia areata, says Dr. Senna. It affects 6.6 million people in the United States, according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Unlike telogen effuvium, this is considered scarring hair loss, because the hairs don’t grow back.

There are dozens of health conditions, as well as a variety of lifestyle factors, that can lead to hair loss or thinning. Sometimes it’s just genetic—this is the sad truth behind many cases—but here are a few other likely culprits behind your hair falling out:

Even men who never go bald thin out somewhat over the years. Unlike those with reversible telogen shedding, those with common male-pattern hair loss don’t notice much hair coming out; they just see that it’s not there anymore. Adolescent boys notice some receding near the temples as their hairlines change from the straight-across boys’ pattern to the more M-shaped pattern of adult men. This normal development does not mean they are losing hair.

Hi Himanshu, genetic hair loss – known in men as Male Pattern Baldness – can often be stopped and reversed. There are two clinically-proven treatments for men aged 18+ which help to stabilise shedding and promote hair growth. Further hair growth boosters can also be added in where needed. You can find out more on our hair loss treatment page.

Just as heat is very harmful to the hair, so are a variety of chemical processing treatments offered by salons. Chemically straightening your hair, bleaching, and lightening your hair can all cause damage to the hair shaft, weakening the hair and causing hair loss. Always try to stick to your natural style and color as closely as possible if you are experiencing hair loss or thinning or the problem will just get worse. If you regularly use chemical processing, make sure you treat your hair to a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week for optimal results.

Great article thx!! I’m 38 and still have a full head of hair but I started to shed about 3 months ago. Typically ~15 hairs on my pillow when I wake up and 20 or so hairs on my hand after I shower. I also notice hairs on my desk during the day. I never noticed any hair loss before 3 months ago. I started to use rogaine 5% twice a day about a month and a half ago and the shedding accelerated. I read that is normal but should it still be doing this after 1.5 months? I haven’t tried propecia yet as I want to see if Rogaine will do the trick but will if the shedding doesn’t stop. Also, do you think stress can play a part in hair loss? I started a super stressful job about 6 months ago so thinking my hair loss could be related to that.

Dubsky points out that shedding 50-100 hairs a day is normal, so you and clients needn’t be worried about the standard amount of hair going down the drain. Women often experience increased shedding after childbirth or with the onset of menopause, but it isn’t necessarily permanent.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in women in which the body manufactures more androgens, or male hormones, than it normally should. Women who suffer from this condition may grow facial hair and extra body hair. One of the other symptoms of this condition is thinning of hair on the head. Women affected with PCOS may also experience weight gain, acne, menstrual irregularities, ovulation problems, depression, and infertility. Hair thinning may be the only outward sign that a woman is suffering from this condition.

Foraha oil is also known as Tamanu, Kamanu, and Alexandrian laurel. It is native to Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region. It has been used by centuries for its remarkable healing power. Foraha has anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antioxidant properties. It contains three types of lipids, as well as a unique fatty acid called calophyllic acid, an antibacterial element called lactone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent called calophyllolide.

What you can do: Slow the hair loss by applying minoxidil (Rogaine) to the scalp twice a day. The drug works on both women and men, although women should use a lower-strength formula to prevent unnecessary side effects. Women should not use minoxidil if they are pregnant or nursing. Men may be treated with finasteride (Propecia), an oral medication.

Ovary also produces testosterone, and when the balance of estrogen and testosterone is tipped, it can cause among other symptoms, excess facial and body hair, and a bald patch on the top of the scalp (female pattern baldness).

Have you ever wondered why your hair does not grow past one point no matter how much you try? This is because, contrary to popular belief, your hair has a life cycle of 3-5 years after which it falls out to let a new hair grow in its place.

Hair-fiber powders: Colored, powdery fiber sprinkles are commercially available and may work to camouflage balding areas. These colored sprinkles have special properties that help them attach to hair and give a fuller appearance. Toppik is one manufacturer of these products and can be found online. These cosmetic products are available without a prescription, are fairly inexpensive ($20-$40 range), and quite safe with minimal risk. Often these may be used in addition to medical treatments like Rogaine, Propecia, and hair transplants, and they are a great temporary measure to tide one over for special occasions.

Although women have lower levels of testosterone than men, androgenetic alopecia can also affect females. According to the British Association of Dermatologists, about 50 percent of women over the age of 65 will experience androgenetic alopecia.

It can sometimes feel like your hair is everywhere: in your shower drain, in your brush, on your sheets, on your clothes, on your partner’s clothes — but just because you’re seeing it shed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re experiencing hair loss. You’re supposed to lose about 100 strands every single day, no matter how you wash or style your hair, says Maryanne Senna, MD, a dermatologist and instructor at Harvard Medical School who specializes in hair loss. But when you notice your hair’s not growing back after it sheds, or if you’re losing clumps that seem outside the norm, it’s usually a sign of or reaction to something else (or in many cases, multiple things) happening in your body, she says.
