Caffeine — Wait, didn’t I say the opposite above? Yes, in small amounts, organic coffee and tea can be beneficial to hair health, but you don’t want to overdo it because too much caffeine can cause dehydration, hormone imbalances and even production of DHT.
Underlying medical condition: Hair loss can be the first sign of a disease. About 30 diseases, including thyroid disease and anemia, cause hair loss. By treating the disease, hair loss often can be stopped or reversed.
Her hope is that the procedure (she has helped start a company named Rapunzel to develop it) will eventually become another lunchtime cosmetic treatment. Once a patient has had her cells harvested and cultured, they could be stored indefinitely; then, after giving her doctor a month’s notice (the time it takes to grow the million needed), she could pop in for injections. Costs would likely be on par with hair transplants, roughly $10,000 and up.
Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said that Rogaine works better on the top and crown (for reasons not fully understood, the frontal hairline tends to be more resistant to treatment) and ideally should be started as soon as women notice thinning. “Any regrowth you get is a minimal amount,” Dr. Piliang said. “So the more density when you start, the better results you get.”
Minaz, thank you very much for your wonderful blog and wealth of information. I am a 65 years old women who has halted my hair loss more or less by focusing on natural hair care and diet. I have even had some considerable regrowth at my hairline which had been my biggest worry. My question to you has to do with the two sides of my head growing back quick differently. My left side is full but my right side is thinner and more gray. Is this something you’ve seen before? Should I focus more of my energies (massage, mask etc) on the right side? I would like to do all I can to even out the two sides as much as possible. Thank you in advance.
Typically, each time a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by hair that is equal in size. But in women with female-pattern hair loss, the new hair is finer and thinner – a more miniaturized version of itself, Rogers says. The hair follicles are shrinking and eventually they quit growing altogether.
Eat well. “Focus on a diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, proteins and beneficial fats,” Dubsky says. “These nutrients stimulate hair follicles to promote a healthier scalp and ultimately, stronger hair.”
I am actually a female but would love to hear your thoughts about the side effects of using minoxidil on skin. Supposedly it impairs collagen production and so speeds up the appearance of wrinkles. Is that true? Is there anything to support that or to disprove that? That is literally the ONLY reason why I am not using minoxidil like… RIGHT now!
The reasons for female pattern hair loss are not totally understood, although it is thought to be related to a family history of male or female baldness, changes in the levels of male hormones (androgens) and aging. Five possible causes:
Just as heat is very harmful to the hair, so are a variety of chemical processing treatments offered by salons. Chemically straightening your hair, bleaching, and lightening your hair can all cause damage to the hair shaft, weakening the hair and causing hair loss. Always try to stick to your natural style and color as closely as possible if you are experiencing hair loss or thinning or the problem will just get worse. If you regularly use chemical processing, make sure you treat your hair to a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week for optimal results.
Minoxidil is definitely worth a try before you do a hair transplant. It works differently compared to finasteride, instead of addressing the main cause of hair loss (DHT), it focuses on regrowing hair. So since you’ve got the DHT part covered by finasteride, there’s a good change minoxidil might regrow some hair and help stop future hair loss.
Cut down on dyes and chemicals. Frequent use of hair colouring chemicals increases the chances of serious damage being done to your hair. Never colour your hair more often than every four to six weeks. When it comes to going gray, it’s a lot kinder to your hair to let it turn grey than to dye it.

If you have any questions, constructive criticism, experiences, thoughts or ideas; leave a comment below. I would be happy to make any changes if any of my facts are wrong or update if you have some useful information for fellow male pattern baldness sufferers.
Scalp reduction is to cut balding scalp out and suture the remaining skin together to reduce the bald area, Kaufman says. After several of these, you have a smaller area to transplant. But you leave a scar that is visible and needs to be transplanted into to be invisible.
yes…..for me, the best thing to use is onion juice two or three times aweek…….mix it with castor oil or coconut oil………one can see an improvement in 2 weeks but it will take 6 months or so to see an excellent result……..it could work for you……try it!
Rub green tea into your hair. Green tea hasn’t yet been scientifically proven to effectively treat hair loss, but some studies have been done and the results suggest that it may be a promising treatment option. Green tea contains antioxidants, which may prevent hair loss and also help hair growth.
Alopcia areata is not related to a more serious condition known as cicatricial alopecia, in which the immune system attacks the stem cells in the bulge of the folicle. This results in permanent hair loss.
The Dove Hair Fall Rescue Treatment contains patented Trichozole active with ginseng and soy protein to help combat hair fall in just two weeks. The shampoo has been specially formulated for hair fall that is caused due to damage. It helps:
The only over-the-counter medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for female pattern hair loss is minoxidil (commonly known by the brand names Rogaine or Theroxidil), a topical treatment which helps slow or stop hair loss in about one in four or five women and can produce some new growth of fine hair in some women, according to Harvard Health Publications
Hair-pulling disorder. This condition, also called trichotillomania (trik-o-til-o-MAY-nee-uh), causes people to have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair, whether it’s from the scalp, the eyebrows or other areas of the body.
The pull test helps to evaluate diffuse scalp hair loss. Gentle traction is exerted on a group of hairs (about 40–60) on three different areas of the scalp. The number of extracted hairs is counted and examined under a microscope. Normally, fewer than three hairs per area should come out with each pull. If more than ten hairs are obtained, the pull test is considered positive.
I’m still not bald enough. I would like my hair to recede a little more off the sides and the back and end up with a smaller fringe of hair. And I would like to lose that last bit of thin ‘peach fuzz’ I still have on top. It is almost invisible and I can hardly feel it, but I know it’s still there.
Hair masks are a mix of various ingredients good for hair but they need not always be chemical based! Make hair masks at home using natural ingredients such as banana, coconut oil, olive oil and honey and control hair loss to a great level!
Millions of people, most of them women, suffer from thyroid disease. When your body produces too little thyroid hormone, the hormone responsible for metabolism, heart rate, and mood, you are said to have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid. If your body makes too much of the hormone, you’re said to have hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Thyroid hormone is responsible for everything from your basal metabolic rate—the rate at which your body uses oxygen and energy to function—to the growth of your hair, skin, and nails. But when you don’t have the right amount, you may notice changes in bodily functions.
Dietary supplements are not typically recommended. There is only one small trial of saw palmetto which shows tentative benefit in those with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia. There is no evidence for biotin. Evidence for most other produces is also insufficient. There was no good evidence for gingko, aloe vera, ginseng, bergamot, hibiscus, or sorphora as of 2011.

Localized or diffuse hair loss may also occur in cicatricial alopecia (lupus erythematosus, lichen plano pilaris, folliculitis decalvans, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia, etc.). Tumours and skin outgrowths also induce localized baldness (sebaceous nevus, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma).
